The FEAST

Brief

Celebration at the table is an ancient and powerful rite. From gathering around a campfire to a boodle fight to midsummer festivals to today’s pop-up restaurants, humans are always keen to gather together for a blow-out meal. The material culture of these events has much to teach us. During this collaborative project, students needed to design products for a massive one-night feast for 100 people: furniture, tableware, and textiles. A local chef will cook. Faculty, students, and paying guests attended.

GOALS FOR THE PROJECT

  • Create a unique dining experience

  • Maintain momentum during a tight schedule and budget

  • Highlight the beauty and seasonality of the food served

Role in the project

My role in the project was to coordinate the lighting group. I was in charge of organizing deadlines for deliverables, creating a bill of materials for lighting components, ordering parts and materials for production, and maintaining a clear creative direction in partnership with the textiles and furniture coordinators.

art direction

The general direction was to create a Spring themed dining experience. We drew inspiration from the vibrance and joy of spring, and the symbolism of new beginnings after a period of isolation. Even though this event would host 100 guests, we still wanted the ambiance to be as intimate as a friendly gathering.
